❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What does DPI mean and how do I scan at the right DPI?
DPI stands for Dots Per Inch — it is the resolution of a scanned image. Higher DPI means sharper, larger files. Most TN Govt portals require 200 DPI. When scanning, open your scanner software (e.g. Windows Fax and Scan, CamScanner) and set the resolution to 200 DPI before scanning.
How do I reduce my photo file size to the specified KB limit?
Use a free tool like Compress JPEG (compressjpeg.com) or ILoveIMG to reduce file size without losing quality. You can also scan at a lower DPI (150 DPI) to get a smaller file. For signatures, a simple black-ink scan on white paper at 150 DPI will usually produce a file under 20KB.
What is a PSTM Certificate and do I need it?
PSTM stands for Person Studied in Tamil Medium. It is an optional certificate that gives you 5% bonus marks in TNPSC exams if you studied from 1st to 10th Standard (or degree level for Group 2) entirely in Tamil medium. Your school headmaster issues this certificate — get it from your school office.
Can I upload a photo clicked on my mobile phone?
Yes, if it meets the specs. Use a plain white or light blue background, ensure the face is clear and front-facing, and compress the image to fit within the file size limit. Avoid selfies with shadows or dark backgrounds. Studio passport photos scanned at 200 DPI are still the most accepted option.
What format should documents be uploaded — JPG or PDF?
For photo and signature — always JPG/JPEG format. For certificates and mark sheets — most TN Govt portals accept PDF format (size limit usually 200KB–1MB per document). For E-Sevai and revenue certificates, upload as PDF scanned at 200 DPI.
Where do I get a Community Certificate?
Apply at your nearest Taluk / Revenue Office or get it digitally through the TN e-District portal (edistrict.tn.gov.in) or E-Sevai centres. The digital copy with a QR code is accepted by all TNPSC and government portals. Ensure it is recent (issued within the last 3 years for most exams).
Is the data in this checklist officially verified?
This tool is for reference and preparation purposes only. Document requirements and file size limits may change with each notification. Always cross-check with the official notification PDF released by TNPSC, TNUSRB, or the relevant board before submitting your application.
